Doula Initiative Stipend Information

This webpage is a resource for participants that attended a MDHHS sponsored Doula Training. If you attended an approved sponsored Doula Training, congratulations on taking the first steps to change birth outcomes in your community and the state of Michigan! Qualified participants will receive a sponsored doula training (valued at $1,500) at no cost to them and are eligible for a stipend upon completion of training and post-training requirements. Please note you must complete all post-training requirements before you fill out the application for stipend reimbursement.

Requirements

  1. View new doula webinars.

    These trainings will take approximately four hours total to complete. You will receive an email with a certificate of completion after viewing each webinar and completing a short survey. Please save your certificates! You will be asked to upload them when you apply for your stipend.

  2. Apply for inclusion on the MDHHS Doula Registry.
    Submit a copy of your training certificate/letter along with a completed Doula Registry Application to MDHHS-MIDoula@michigan.gov. The application is also available in Spanish and Arabic. Please save your approval email, you will be asked to upload it when you apply for your stipend.

  3. Enroll as a Medicaid Provider.
    Complete steps 2 – 5 of Become a Medicaid Enrolled Doula. After completing the steps, a letter will be delivered to your home address that confirms your enrollment as a Medicaid provider. This letter begins with “You are receiving this letter because you have been approved for the Michigan Medical Assistance Program”. Please save this letter, you will be asked to upload a copy or photo of it when you apply for your stipend. These step-by-step instructions demonstrate how to receive a digital copy of the Michigan Medical Assistance Program Approval Letter. If you have been approved as a Medicaid provider but have not received your letter yet, use this guidance to ensure your application is submitted by September 15, 2026.

  4. Complete MDHHS-sponsored training evaluation and reimbursement information.

  • Complete sections 1, 2, 3 (you must have one box checked), 5, 6; Part I, and signature and date on Part II.

Payment Processing Timeframe

  • Step 1: Forms and documents should be started after completing the sponsored training as it may take several weeks to complete the requirements. Completed stipend reimbursement application is due no later than September 15, 2026.
  • Step 2: Submission will be reviewed to make sure it includes all required information and has no errors. If submission has missing/incomplete information or needs revisions, this will delay the timeframe for payment.
  • Step 3: Checks will be cut by the Michigan Public Health Institute.
  • Step 4: Checks are mailed to address on W-9 within 4-6 weeks of approval.
